The Top 7 Best Things To Do In Témara, Morocco (Rabat) – Travel Guide

Best Things To Do In Témara, Morcco (Rabat) - Travel Guide

If you’re in Morocco visiting Rabat or Casablanca, spending one day (or half day) in Témara is definitely something you should do. This little city is located only about 15 min from Rabat, and consists of two parts : Temara Centre (the “downtown” of Témara) and Témara Plage (Temara Beach in English). If you don’t have a lot of time during your trip, we would recommend you prioritizing Témara Plage, as it has more fun things to do and places to visit.

1 – Go to The Beach of Plage des Contrebandiers in Harhoura (Témara Plage).

One of the absolute must-dos in Temara is hitting the beaches. Picture yourself lounging on soft sands, with the gentle lull of the waves serenading you. You’ve got options – whether you’re into surfing, swimming, or simply soaking up the sun, Temara’s got a spot for you. And hey, if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try your hand at some water sports? Trust us, the thrill is worth it. Harhoura beach is very crowded in summer, and by night there is a lot of animation going on, such as funfair and similar activities.

Other nearby beaches worth the swim are plage de Sable d’Or (with its beach houses reminding you a Malibu beach vibe) and Plage Sidi El Abed. The Contrebandiers beach and Sable d’Or beach are connected by a nice Corniche walk, while the Sable d’Or beach and Sidi El Abed beach are naturally connected by sand. A lot of restaurants and night clubs are available about 300 meters from the beach, such as Le Rivage or the Café San Francisco with its very nice Afro-tribal style. A nice place to enjoy the nightlife of Temara.

2 – Explore the Kasbah of Temara in Temara City and The Old Market Souk

Step back in time and explore the Kasbah of Temara, a historic gem nestled within the city. Wander through narrow alleyways lined with traditional Moroccan architecture, soaking in the rich history and culture. The Ismaili Kasbah (also known as the Kasbah of Temara) is a historic monument dating back to the 12th century. It’s a military fortification built by the Almohads at the beginning of their rule. This military compound, located in the heart of Temara city (Temara Centre), covers an area of 72 hectares. Surrounded by a tall wall measuring 6.5 meters high, it now houses an Almohad mosque, the mausoleum of Sidi Lahcen, and the Royal School of Cavalry. Once you finish visiting the Kasbah, you can head to the food market (close the the Wilaya of Temara), where you can try local fruits and dishes.

3 – Visit the Old Cave Grotte des Contrebandiers in Harhoura

Facing the beach of Sable d’Or, a nice cave by the name of Smugglers’ Cave (Grotte des Contrebandiers, or El Mnasra cave according to the locals) with some stalagmites and stalactites (still forming!) awaits you. Archaeological studies have revealed evidence of human use for over 40,000 years, particularly by the discovery of multiple aterians. The Aterian tools, prominent in the Maghreb region, were especially developed in the Rabat-Temara area (including the caves of Dar Es Soltane and the caves of El Harhoura 1 and 2).  Some archaeological studies are still conducted there sometimes, so the access might be restricted, although the staff is always very nice and probably be more than happy to show you around, as only a few people are aware of this gem.

Travel Guides Genius Insiders Tips: The cave entry it totally free of charge, you might see a small white guardhouse with a gard sleeping there, surrounded by some fences in front of the cave; just open the fence and feel free to roam inside. If the guard asks you anything, just tell him you’re here to visit, he will help you to get around (for free).

Skhirat is located about 13 min by car from the first beach of this guide (Plage des Contrebandiers). A part from water activities, this beach features very nice houses, offering you a pleasant walk on the sand. This beach has also great waves, perfect for surfing. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to surfing or already a pro, the waves here are just right for everyone. Grab your surfboard, catch those waves, and enjoy the thrill of surfing while surrounded by beautiful views of the coast. A lot of restaurants are also available around such as Restaurant Agora or Dar Mouloud. If you prefer something more classy (and pricey), the beach club and hotel L’Amphitrite Palace with a very nice swimming pool is waiting for you.

Lace up your hiking boots and get into this tranquil oasis (with no sand though), where towering trees and winding trails await. Take a leisurely stroll or pack a picnic and enjoy a peaceful day surrounded by nature. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife – you never know what furry friends you might encounter along the way. Many Moroccans are used to going there during weekend mornings for a refreshing walk.

How to get there? Here’s the Google Maps link to the parking south entrance of the forrest.
